The relationship between fashion and art has been long and volatile yet since the modern era, they have always worked as de facto partners. Their relationship was particularly strong in the early 20th century and with the Japanese new wave of designers. Now, the relationship appears to be coming closer again. A broad range of artistic languages have become powerful inspiration for fashion practice. Fashion scholar Valerie Steele discusses this relationship both past and present with artist, theoretician and Sydney College of the Arts senior lecturer, Dr Adam Geczy. Listed in New York Daily News as one of Fashion’s 50 Most Powerful People, Valerie Steele is the director and curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.

Funded by the Australia Council for the Arts, this is part of the Art Monthly Australia Lecture series and also supported by the University of Technology Sydney and the University of Sydney.
